Allende uses juxtaposition and hyperbole to emphasize the importance that Belisa Crepusculario places on her vocation. When the narrator describes Belisa Crepusculario’s vocation, she describes the fact that Belisa Crepusculario would deliver “verses from memory” for five centavos, but she would improve “the quality of dreams” (3) for seven centavos. The juxtaposition of these two descriptions, emphasized by the much more exaggerated second description, shows that Belisa Crepusculario believes her work is critical for people’s betterment.
