The narrator encapsulates the Colonel’s building romantic relationship with Belisa Crepusculario through the use of symbolism and imagery. When Belisa Crepusculario encounters the Colonel for the first time, she notices that he has “the eyes of a ferocious puma” (7). Later in the story, the Colonel senses the “scent of a mountain cat” (10) emanating from Belisa Crepusculario. The author uses the imagery of wildcats to demonstrate the intense connection that exists between Belisa Crepusculario and the Colonel.
