El Mulato’s relationship with Belisa Crepusculario changes slightly throughout the story, but it follows the same general trend overall. When Belisa Crepusculario and El Mulato first encounter each other, El Mulato’s men affront Belisa Crepusculario, “knocking over her canopy and shattering her inkwell” (6). This shows that their relationship starts with conflict. Later in the story, El Mulato tries to reach out and “touch her” (10), but Belisa Crepusculario rejects his advances. After this momentary lapse, El Mulato’s disposition towards Belisa Crepusculario returns to one of aggression and hostility.
