The two old women become close because it is a necessity..... because they are sharing a common experience, and an experience that is often beyond their duration. They live together, work together, and encourage each other. They are depressed because they no longer trust the other members of their tribe, and they are afraid the younger people will come back and claim everything they have worked for.
