The baby bovine in this poem is unique in that he was born with two heads. Giving the poem its title, the two-headed calf can be perceived in different ways. In the first stanza, he is referred to as a "freak of nature" due to the genetic mutation that led to him having two heads (2). In the second stanza, the speaker reveals the way the cow sees twice as many stars as any being with just one head. In other words, he is capable of seeing twice the beauty in the world due to his difference.
The two-headed calf will not survive for very long, but in the meantime, his perspective and existence have something beautiful to teach readers.
