North as a cardinal direction symbolizes truth. The two-headed calf stands with his mother "in the north / field," and due to the later focus on stars, this image resonates with the guiding light of the North Star (4-5). The two-headed calf may soon be fated to die, but for his one night of life, he has something to teach the reader.
