What metaphors are used in True Believer by Virginia Euwer Wolff?

The Joyful Universal Church of Jesus is the church that Annie and Myrtle join to help keep themselves on the right path. The church preaches extremely conservative Christian ideals with rigid guidelines for member behaviors. As the novel progresses, it becomes clear that the organization is more of a cult than a religious institution. It becomes a metaphor for control and exploitation.
