How is the theme of gender roles defined in the plot of the play?

The main theme of this play is a feminist one. As such, the women herein cast away all cattiness, pettiness, jealousy and even alliances to their husbands, and instinctively protect Minnie as one of their own regardless of her respective innocence or guilt of the crime that she is accused of.
