When Mr. Henderson remarks on the unkempt state of Mrs. Wright's kitchen, Mrs. Hale comes to her defense, saying, "Men's hands aren't always as clean as they might be." Mr. Henderson laughs that she is being loyal to her sex and supposes that the two women were friends as well.
