The black/white relationships are addressed in terms of race and class consciousness. Ms. Aggy wants Len to marry Magaret, a woman of superior standing, because she has light skin and straight hair. She is certain that by marrying Magaret, Len will instantly be elevated in society. On the other hand, she believes that if Len marries Lois, a local woman with very dark skin, his social status will be diminished. As a result, she discourages his relationship with Lois and is appalled when she learns they have actually married. Miss Aggy attempts to destroy their marriage repeatedly.
