Father Slattery, the religious leader at the academy where Cushla teaches, is a fundamental Catholic, one who preaches to his students and congregation that Protestants are evil killers. He is often predatory and abusive toward Davy, whose mother is a Protestant, and repeatedly warns Cushla not to become involved with them.
