Why do the boys jump off of the train before it pulls into the station?

Raphael tells the reader that he and Rat and Gardo jump off the train early because "you don't ever want to be seen getting off the train" (44). He says that if guards or porters see passengers getting off whom they suspect have not paid, they will severely beat those passengers.
