How does Lily react to her son joining the Union army in the novel, TransAtlantic?

When her son joins the Union Army, Lily becomes a nurse in a field hospital in order to be near him. When his body is brought in from the battle field, Lily finishes caring for the living soldiers before turning her attention to her dead son.
