Frank Begbie is the most prominent non-addict in the novel. An alcoholic and scam artist, Begbie is the dominant center of the coteries of lowlifes in the novel. He is a violent sociopath who bullies and beats everyone around him. The group feels fidelity to him only out of fear and on account of the fact that they've know him since childhood. Begbie, meanwhile, despises junkies as a rule and loves to start fights at pubs.
