Why does John want to touch the doe in Chapter Ten?

John wants the doe to know he means her no harm, but he knows she cannot know this. He is determined to find a way to touch the doe, as by touching her, he will be touching himself, his spirit, his grandfather’s spirit, and death. Death would be defeated.
