Who is Ian Whittaker from Touching the Void and what is their importance?

Ian is climbing in the French Alps with his team when the ground, where they are planning to sleep, gives way and leaves them dangling by their safety lines. They wait for 12 hours before they are rescued. Ian returns to the Alps the following year but looses his passion for climbing.
