What is the symbolism of the at.oow in the novel, Touching Spirit Bear?

The at.oow is a blanket given to Cole by Garvey. The blanket serves as a symbol of Garvey's trust.... he trusts that Cole will take care of it and will be open to change. Cole uses the blanket on several occasions as a tablecloth to make meals more meaningful. He passes the blanket on to Peter, as Peter begins his own journey of healing.
