What event enables both Cole and Peter to truly begin healing?

After some time together on the island, Peter eventually strikes out at Cole. Peter repeatedly hits Cole and it takes a great deal of self-control for Cole to stand his ground without hitting back. It's only after this confrontation that the boys find themselves able to begin true healing from the effects of the abuse.
