How did the Spirit Bear's attack on Cole end? Chapter Eight

The Spirit Bear's attack on Cole ended with the bear simply turning and walking away.

Finally it drew in a deep breath, raised its massive head ,and stepped casually to the side. With a lazy shuffle, it turned away and wandered down the shoreline.
