Who was Paracelsus as noted in the nonfiction book, Toms River?

Paracelsus practiced medicine in the 1500s in a way that no one else in recorded history did: he observed the patient. While others blame humors or spirits, he was looking for causes that could be recorded in some way. In a very rudimentary way, and in spite of many mistakes, he laid the groundwork for environmental sciences.
