Why does Mr. Ramsay become so angry with his wife when she is measuring James' leg for the stockings she is knitting?

He is angry because she does not deal in the facts. He tells her that the trip to the lighthouse is out of the question, yet she still holds out hope for a good day. He is irate at the false hope she gives James. Her irrational remarks are seen as lies to him.
