Karl Marx was a German Jew who lived in Germany. He was educated at the Friedrick-Wilhelm Gymnasium at Trier. From a long line of rabbis, his father was the first to break the family tradition and not become a rabbi, becoming a lawyer. The young Karl learned of the works of Saint-Simon from his neighbor, Baron von Westphalen. He married Jenny Westphalen in June, 1843, and wrote poetry as a youth. Karl attended the University of Bonn in 1835, where he was usually in some kind of trouble for his ideas and activities. He studied law in Berlin until 1841 but was more interested in philosophy.
