Describe symbolism in To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher by William Ayers

In his preface, Ayers laments the large population of Americans that are incarcerated, two million when the book was publishes. Ayers believes that this symbolizes a retreat from a society that believes in learning, instead locking people away.
