Although Alan is killed early in the novel, Kira continued to think about him and represented an intense form of guilt for Kira. Kira cannot come to forgive herself for accidentally impaling Alan with the Soft Blade, and throughout the novel she frequently thinks back to the plans they had before the events on Adra.
