The Cunninghams in the town are considered by most to be subhuman and inferior. To be a Cunningham was to be stupid according to many. The Cunninghams are simply so poor that they can't always afford to do things the way others do, nor fit in. Scout is simply repeating what she's heard, but when Calpurnia sets her straight and explains what it means, Scout is sorry.
