The mob that confronted atticus was high on the fact that they are about to kill a black man who raped a white woman. When Scout picked out one of the individuals and started talking to him about his son and life. He realized that if they do lynch Tom. Scout knows he was there and he can be charged with murder. He also realized what he was doing and came to his senses.
