In "To Kill a Mockingbird" in Chapter 16, who interrupts the scene at the jail?

Scout and Jem arrive at the jail, curious as to what their father is doing there. None-the-less, it is Scout's direct interaction with Mr. Cunningham that diffuses the situation at the jail.
