To be dichotomous is to live a double life, or to have two faces that are presented to the world. This definitely defines Mayella Ewell. To the outside world she presents this very pious, wholesome, frail young girl. However, the reader sees in the way she flirts and makes sexual advances to Tom Robinson, another darker side. It is this side of her that lies on the stand until Atticus tricks her into admiting everything.
