He comforts Dill at the trial when Dill breaks down crying at the verdict. He puts an arm around him and tells him that he might as well get used to it because as a person of color the deck will always be stacked against him. He reassures him that soon he will not be bothered by it and will learn to work around it.

She has been a caregiver for the family since Jem was born and is in many ways a surrogate mother to both of the children. She is their moral compass in addition to their father, and she is the one that teaches the children that people of color are the same as whites.
