Scout and Jem both change because of the events surrounding their father's court case. The case revolved around a black man who was accused of supposedly raping a white girl in town. Atticus Finch believed that he was innocent when everyone else considered him guilty just based on the color of his skin. Both children mature throughout the novel and leave some of the innocence behind as a result of the uglier side of human nature that is shown to them because of this case .
