Who is the main character in "To Be a Slave" by Julius Lester?

Although there is not a main character in the book, several characters stand out from the others. Among these is Uncle Silas, an elderly slave who questions the philosophy that eternal rest in heaven is earned by serving one's master on earth with unqualified loyalty. Another is Lew Cheney, a charismatic young slave who raises the expectations of the slaves on the Hawkins plantation by planning a revolt and a crusade to Mexico. Sadly, Cheney betrays his people, which results in the hanging of many innocent slaves.
