Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is the rural area of France where Michael spends the summer of 1990, living and then also working at a "mas," or an informal type of farmhouse that is converted to a hotel in the summer months. This location, surrounded by natural beauty, is where Michael is finally able to work out his grief over the loss of G and the many other gay men who die prematurely in the AIDS hospital.
