What is Robert Doniger's real purpose in his work as the CEO of ITC Research in the novel, Timeline?

Doniger is a brilliant man who has owned three other successful companies and made himself exceedingly rich. This current company is working on a way to allow humans to travel to alternate universes. Doniger appears to be doing this research to further mankind, but it eventually comes out that he is doing it in order to make money off of the tourists who will visit historical landmarks he has helped rebuild to their former glory.
