Why is Wah-lit-its determined to take revenge against the white soldiers in the novel, Thunder Rolling in the Mountains?

Wah-lit-its' father was killed by a white soldier, making him particularly bent on revenge and leading him to start a war with the white soldiers when a fellow Ne-mee-poo accuses him of being too slow to avenge his father.
