Why does Snopes end up with five dollars in his hand at the end of the auction?

At the end of the auction, Hipps is so moved by Henry's wife's pleas to return the last of their money that he attempts to give the money back. Henry will hear nothing of it and slaps the money back into Hipps' hands. Not knowing what else to do, Hipps gives the five dollars to Snopes and tells Henry's wife to collect the money from him in the next few days.
