In the second half of the story "The Old Man", it becomes clear to the reader that the tall convict is relaying the events of his time away from the prison to the fat convict, making clear that the tall convict eventually returns to prison after a taste of freedom. He was away from the prison for eight weeks and claims that the whole time, all he could think about was getting the pregnant woman to a safe place, and doing everything "the right way".
