What is the reaction from the townsfolk when news spreads that both Old Ben and Sam are dead?

When news spreads that Old Ben is dead, townsfolk flock from miles around to see the corpse of the animal they hold responsible for terrorizing their crops and flocks. One man, McCaslin, accuses Boon of killing Sam out of mercy. Ike doesn't understand the man's accusation at the time, and Boon does not respond to it.
