When the white settlers moved in from Europe, they thought they could own not only land, but also people, most notably the African slaves they brought with them. To Ike, this mentality has plagued the South and even the bloody Civil war could not cure the sense of entitlement White men have felt over Blacks. To Ike, even the Emancipation Proclamation was worthless because it did nothing to stop the White government from continuing to suppress the Black civilians, making them feel like second-class citizens.
