What casualties are incurred while Old Ben is fighting for his life in the moments before his death?

In the moments before Old Ben's death, the bear is sniffed out by Lion and the animals engage in a savage fight in which Lion is fatally wounded. Also, the bear falls, Sam is found inexplicably lying face-down in the mud, unconscious. When the doctor investigates Sam, he says the old man has simply just given up. Sam dies a few days after the bear is killed.
