Toward the end of the trip on the Red Cross steamboat, the doctor has surmised that the man he is traveling with is an escaped convict. He corners the convict and asks him the truth about his crimes and the convict tells him everything. At the end of the story, the doctor seems almost amused with the convict and asks if he's learned his lesson. Before the convict disembarks the ship, the doctor tries to hand him a fistful of money, but it is unclear whether or not the convict takes it.
