At the end of the auction, all of the wild horses purchased have escaped with the exception of Eck's horse, which suffered a broken neck in the corralling process and did not survive. The farmers wonder if Ratcliff had been right all along and this whole ordeal was a scam set up by Hipps to sell them horses they could not control only to recapture the horses himself and sell them to the next town.
