When Mrs. Armstid came to Snopes' store to inquire about her money, Snopes wouldn't look her directly in the eyes and just continued his whittling. When she left, he spat in her direction, showing his lack of respect for her. This lack of respect continued in the courtroom when he gleefully rejoiced with his dishonest family, who lied on his behalf, swearing that Snopes had returned Armstid's money to Hipps before he left town.
