Jessica can't got to brunch because she got into a fight with her mother for not calling the night before and has to go sort things out with her. It is significant because, unlike Warren, Jessica has a good relationship with her mother and wants to maintain it. Her judgment was apparently clouded by being with Warren, indicating that he is perhaps a bad influence on her.
