Kay's perspective is one that is critical of the healthcare system in England. Ultimately, this perspective is fueled by his time spent on the labor wards of the NHS. This is Going to Hurt is therefore an extremely personal reflection on the life of a doctor, as Kay uses his experience to extrapolate to make arguments about the NHS as a whole. The book is written from the first person perspective and gives the reader insight into the personal life of a doctor in the NHS.
