Okonkwo brings palm-wine and a cock to Nwakibie, a wealthy man of the village. They drink together and with Nwakibie's sons and neighbors. After drinking the wine, Okonkwo asks Nwakibie if he can be a sharecropper for him, and promises to work hard and not fail. Nwakibie entrusts Okonkwo with eight hundred yam seeds.
