How do the people of Umuofia justify mutilating the bodies of children who die in infancy or early childhood, refusing to bury them but leaving them in the forest?

These children are thought to be ogbanje, wicked children who come back over and over again to torment their mothers. They mutilate them, cut them to pieces, and refuse to bury them, hoping the ogbanje will not return again, allowing the mother to have a normal child that will grow to adulthood.
