This is a pretty detailed topic for this short answer forum. The coming of the white man caused the implosion of the Igbo culture. It is interesting that Chinua Achebe does not paint the arrival of the white man and his church as entirely negative. The church gave Igbo who were ostracized and isolated, like Ikemefuna, a place a refuge for protection and belonging. Eventually the white man would, for better and worse, change the Igbo forever.
