In Chapter Eleven of Their Eyes Were Watching God, Tea Cake is determined to get Janie's attention, even though she's made up her mind to give him the cold shoulder. She enjoys the freedom that she now enjoys due to Joe's death. Marrying again seems like a prison sentence. However, when Tea Cake walks in he pretends to be playing an air guitar and it cracks Janie up. They end up drinking cokes, then go fishing in the dark, and playing checkers.
