What happens at the end of the scene to send Will into the fury that leads to his heart attack?

Lily Dale tells Pete that she has given $35,000 of her Christmas money to the young man from Atlanta. Pete calls him a bum and threatens to go over to the YMCA and break his neck. Will swears and curses and tells Lily Dale she has been taken for a fool.
