Noah Ackerman is an American who has not much of anything except a loving wife. He is an orphan, poor, Jewish, and physically frail, the ultimate outcast in a robust, Protestant, acquisitive population. To survive boot camp Noah must fight the unthinking anti-Semites in his platoon. Once overseas, Noah finds himself in the forefront of the bloody Normandy fighting and learns that he is a better soldier than his bigger, more jingoistic buddies.
